SPRING 2013 FILM AND LECTURE SERIES

The Film and Lecture Series is designed to provide students and members of the community with the opportunity to engage in topics of social interest and relevance through the screening of thoughtful movies and by bringing speakers to the campus who have demonstrated knowledge on topics deemed to be of social significance.  Each film will be followed by a discussion with guest speakers or panelists. 

WHERE: Forum Building Room 110 (located on MJC's East Campus)

WHEN: THURSDAY EVENINGS at 7 PM to 9 PM

COST: FREE - The films are free and open to the public

 

  • FEBRUARY 21, Thursday, 7 pm, Forum 110 ~ Sing Your Song: Harry Belafonte ~  Most people know of Harry Belafonte as a mesmerizing entertainer. This film widens the lens on him to show his life-long commitment as a passionate activist in the Civil Rights Movement in America and in promoting social justice globally. Robert Redford regards Belafonte as a "man whose story should be told for generations to come." This film tells that inspiring story.

 

  • MARCH 7, Thursday, 7 pm, Forum 110 ~ Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide ~   Half the Sky highlights the oppression of women and girls in various countries with a focus on sex slavery and trafficking, violence, and rape. The film emphasizes the importance of education and female empowerment as a means to end gender inequality.

 

  • MARCH 21, Thursday, 7 pm, Forum 110 ~ Hell and Back Again   ~ A 2012 Academy Award nominee for best documentary, Hell and Back Again follows the life of one marine, Sergeant Nathan Harris, both on and off the battlefield.  After being wounded in Afganistan, Harris faces challenges at home in North Carolina adjusting to a new life marked by boredom, physical therapy, pain medication, and a supportive but strained marriage.

   

  • APRIL 4, Thursday, 7 pm, Forum 110 ~ Climate of Doubt ~  In the 2012 documentary Climate of Doubt, a PBS Frontline correspondent investigates recent shifts in the climate change debate and looks especially at the funding, the organized efforts, and the ideology behind the skeptic movement.

     

  • APRIL 18, Thursday, 7 pm, Forum 110 ~ Faith-based Perspectives on Environmental Challenges and Solutions ~  A panel discussion with local religious leaders.
