Are you extremely focused on transferring to UC or CSU and getting into your major? Are you in the process of completing the IGETC pattern with great grades so that you can easily pursue your academic and career goals? If so, take note!
In order to expand and enhance educational pathways for motivated MJC students, a Transfer Honors Program will open in the Fall of 2007. This program will better stimulate, challenge, and prepare students to make them academically competitive within any major at four-year colleges and universities. Although the program is designed to meet the needs of transferring students, any student who meets the entrance requirements may participate. Students who graduate from the program will experience any number of perks through enhanced transfer agreements. Perks can include one or more of the following: priority admission and registration at transfer institutions, scholarships, continuation of the honors experience at the transfer institution, campus visits and receptions, library card privileges, guaranteed housing, invitations to cultural events.
What is the MJC Honors Program?
If you are a highly motivated or an accomplished student and would like your education at MJC to prepare you to compete well at the highest university levels, then the MJC Honors Program may be for you. This program is meant to further promote excellence by honing the skills and talents of our intellectually gifted, uniquely creative, and/or academically committed students. Honors students are challenged and guided by honors faculty to delve deeper, think more critically, and argue more persuasively. These students also have the opportunity to meet other gifted students and experience the spirit and encouragement of such a like-mindedly determined cohort.
What are Honors Units?
Honors Contract Units are NOT additional units to be completed, but rather overlap your educational plan. After you work with a counselor and choose an educational plan (Transfer Studies Plan, Central Valley Guaranteed Transfer Plan, or Occupational & Technical Studies Plan) you will seek honors enhancement of the transferable courses you already intend to take. You can either approach professors and ask them if they will enhance your course or go to the honors coordinator for a list of professors who have already self-identifi ed themselves as willing to enhance their courses for honors students. Honors Contract units are based on transferable and no-less-than 3 unit courses. See the Honors Student Handbook for specific criteria.
What are the benefits of being in the MJC Honors Program?
Besides the experience of an enhanced education and being better prepared to compete at the university level, students who graduate from the program will gain any number of perks through enhanced transfer agreements. Perks can include one or more of the following: priority admission and registration at transfer institutions, scholarships, continuation of the honors experience at the transfer institution, campus visits and receptions, library card privileges, guaranteed housing, and invitations to cultural events. Students who apply early enough will also receive priority admission into English 101 at MJC.
