Using Student Surveys to Collect Microdata that Helps Students Succeed (FLEX# 5131)

Equity gaps persist in higher education and are even wider online. In this presentation, we will explore how instructors can survey students and target those who may need extra support early on, when students are most vulnerable, and when the Imposter Syndrome feels most acute. Using student-generated microdata, instructors become Warm Demanders by using Canvas video feedback tools to form the instructor-student relationship students need to succeed.

Six Equity Practices to Enhance Online Instruction  (FLEX# 5133)

Video Storage and Captioning through 3C Media  (FLEX# 5135)

3C Media  offers video storage and professional captioning services to California Community College faculty.  You can upload your instructional videos to 3C, have them professionally captioned, and embed them in Canvas with a few clicks. Join this workshop to go over the basics of getting started with 3C Media: uploading a video, requesting captions, and streaming in Canvas.
To get a head start, sign up for a 3C Media account and make sure to "request uploads."

Zoom Break-out Rooms:  Tools for Engagement and Interaction (FLEX# 5136)

Learn to use Zoom Break-out rooms for engaging and effective small-group work, including the following skills:

  • Setting permissions to enable break-out rooms and other hidden tools.

Getting to Know Your Online Learner (FLEX# 5137)

If you are shifting your course to partially online or fully online during this crazy time for us all, it might seem daunting to not have direct contact with your learners. Are they new to online learning? Have they had a bad experience with online before? Will they be smarter than you in the online environment? In this workshop, we will explore three different learner personas, portrayals of typical learners, that help us assess these challenges and find ways we can make their experience with the learning more successful.

Utilizing Free Tools to Support Student-Generated Content  (FLEX# 5138)

With the rise in popularity of motivating students by offering choices in their educational activities, the questions that follow are what tools are intuitive to the student, easy for the instructor to guide, compatible with the school’s LMS, and accessible. This workshop will present a few tools that instructors could encourage students to use for collaboration and creative thinking.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the workshop, teachers will be able to

  1. discover the utility of some online tools that are free, intuitive to the student, and easy for the instructor to guide.
  2. infer ways of offering students choices in their educational activities.
  3. evaluate the utility of the same tools to deliver instructional materials.

Using Perusall for Student Group Annotations (FLEX# 5151)

Using Proctorio for Online Exam Proctoring (FLEX# 5142)

Do you remember the Respondus Lockdown Browser? Proctorio is like that, but on steroids.  This can be good and bad, and we will discuss why.  In this session, we will review Proctorio, a program designed to help prevent cheating in online exams.

Student Success and Support through the Collaborative and Re-Entry Success Network (FLEX# 5144)

Glen and Ulises will introduce faculty and staff to the Re-Entry Success Network.  The program was initiated for students that have been formerly incarcerated.  Students who access the program services will:

  • Recognize the reduced rates of recidivism as they progress through the completion of continued higher education degrees.
  • Engage with a community of peers and staff that identify with their personal and academic experiences.
  • Participate in workshops and sessions that allow for increased persistence and completion rates.
  • Identify the resources available at Modesto Junior College that will contribute to the successful completion of their academic goals.
  • Demonstrate comprehension of personal and academic expectations of the college environment.

Lasana Hotep

Lasana O. Hotep is an antiracist and antisexist educator, strategic thought partner, and equity-advancing executive coach with a commitment to dismantling institutional inequities and creating transformative solutions for people and organizations. As the founder and Lead Consultant of Hotep Consultants, he leverages his culturally sustaining historical analysis with practices rooted in racial justice to address issues of equity within the workplace. Lasana currently serves as the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging at the University of California, Berkeley. In addition to these roles, he is a writer, highly sought after lecturer, and established education professional.
