The study of biology includes various aspects of life, including basic organization (molecular, cellular, tissues, organs), how organisms function, their roles in the natural environment, transfer and mutation of hereditary information, evolution, and the development and applications of biotechnology. To earn an Associate in Arts Degree with an emphasis in biology, students must complete coursework and other requisites detailed in the Associate Degree Requirements. In addition to these general education requirements are biological science core courses and elective coursework, as described in the Associate in Arts Degree for Biology. By fulfilling the requirements of the MJC emphasis in biology, students will also be completing some or all lower-division preparation for baccalaureate major at the university. ASSIST (www.assist.org) is a statewide database of recorded transfer agreements between community colleges and universities. Students are advised to use ASSIST in selecting courses from the emphasis to ensure that the coursework applies to your baccalaureate major. Core biology courses and electives have been specifically designed to fulfill requirements for MJC graduation, and for articulation with universities and other academic institutions throughout the US, and in many cases, overseas.

The Associate in Science in Biology for Transfer (AST) degree is designed to prepare students for transfer to a California State University to pursue a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Biology or a Biology-related discipline by providing students with the core curriculum required in the first two years of a Biology major college experience. The basis for any biological sciences degree requires courses in a general biology series (organismal, ecology, evolution, molecular and cellular biology), chemistry, calculus and physics. The Associate in Science in Biology for Transfer degree program is intended and designed to make the transfer of Modesto Junior College students to CSU seamless. The requirements of this degree align with the Transfer Model Curriculum. It is the most efficient pathway for students desiring to transfer to CSU as a Biology-related major in a timely manner. Students completing the Associate in Science in Biology for Transfer Degree (AST in Biology) are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. Students transferring to a CSU campus that does accept this degree will be required to complete no more than 60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree. Students should consult with a counselor to determine whether this degree is the best option for their transfer goals.

In all cases, students should consult with a counselor for more information on university admission and transfer requirements.

This degree includes lower division coursework required for transfer and provides students with foundational insight into the complexities of the contemporary business environment. Coursework in the areas of accounting, business law, and economics will equip students to recognize and analyze business, financial, and ethical issues in order to make informed decisions. Students who transfer to a CSU campus will be able to pursue a bachelor’s degree with emphasis in areas such as accounting, finance, general business, computer information systems, human resources management, international business, entrepreneurship, operations management, and marketing. This degree may not be the best option for students intending to transfer to a university or college that is not part of the CSU system. Students should consult with a counselor for more information on university admission and transfer requirements.
