Step 2: Obtain an Official Letter
"Homeless youth and former homeless youth” means a student under 25 years of age,
who has been verified, in the case of a former homeless youth, at any time during
the 24 months immediately preceding the application for admission.
Priority Registration will be assigned for 6 years, upon verification of homeless
status.
Submit an Official Letter from a high school or school district homeless liaison,
the director of an emergency shelter or transitional housing program, or the director
of a runaway or homeless youth basic center or transitional living program.
Step 3: Submit to Enrollment Services
Send the homeless verification letter to the Enrollment Services Department.
MJC Pirate Housing Opportunity Grant (MPHOG)
The MJC Pirate Housing Opportunity Grant (MPHOG) is reserved for student(s) who are
at risk of losing their home; experiencing a brief, unexpected housing crisis or are
homeless. This program is funded by Assembly Bill 74 College-Focused Rapid Re-Housing
(AB 74-RRH). This is a state-funded program and current enrollment in Modesto Junior
College is required; including a minimum of 9 units successfully completed.
“Homeless” and “Housing Insecure” means students who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate
nighttime residence. Look below for more information if you qualify!
Who qualifies for the MJC Pirate Housing Opportunity Grant?
Sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or
a similar reason
Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative
adequate accommodations
Living in an emergency or transitional shelter
Abandoned in hospitals
Living in a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed
for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings
Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus
or train stations, or similar settings
Students must be actively enrolled in classes for the semester requesting the grant
Students must be enrolled in credited courses
Student must have a financial aid application on file with the MJC Financial Aid office: Either theFree Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)or theCalifornia Dream Act Application (CADAA)
Student must have a Financial aid file completed (RP status)
Students must have an unmet need
Students must provide proof of need at the time of request such as:
A notice of eviction, a letter from the landlord stating the student is behind on
rent, a mortgage bill, a letter from a community agency, etc.
If a student does not have supporting documentation, they will need a 3rdparty letter from a professional
If a student is not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress, a grade check will be
requested
The Pirate Housing Opportunity Grant must be used for housing expenses only
Students may request the Pirate Housing Opportunity Grant once in the semester and
a maximum of 2 times. Student may appeal against a decision with proper supporting
documentation, academic progress report, and mentoring.
Student does not meet Satisfactory Academic Progress for the current semester
Student did not provide supporting documentation directly connected to an emergency
housing crisis.
Student record indicates that the student has maxed out on this Emergency Grant.
Student’s financial portfolio does not show a current “unmet need” amount.
Student is not currently enrolled in MJC course(s) for the current semester.
The student was previously awarded the housing grant but did not successfully complete
more than 50% of the units attempted; the student must complete at least 50% of units
attempted before being eligible for a second request.
Appeals:
For all appeals beyond reasonable doubt not stated in the possible reasons for denial,
an academic performance report is required. The report will be reviewed to confirm
that academic progress has been made. The student must also have met with an MJC counselor,
program specialist, or mentor, and must provide a detailed budget plan outlining how
funds will be allocated and how they were used previously. Additional supporting documentation
may be required at the discretion of the Housing Grant Committee.
Eligibility for appeals will be determined by the Housing Grant Committee using professional
judgment.
If the student is seeking a second housing grant in consecutive semesters, an academic
performance report will be required. The report will be reviewed to ensure the student
demonstrates academic progress.
Additional supporting documentation may be required at the discretion of the Housing
Grant Committee.
