A computer user on a laptop sees an alert warning of a scam

Phishing emails that target students continue to be prevalent. A number of MJC students have reported receiving scam emails about pending allocations of financial aid funds. Students are being asked to click a link and enter personal information in order to access allocated funds. If you are invited to access funds/allocations from an unsolicited email address STOP and check to make sure the request is not coming from scammers.

To avoid providing personal information to scammers, take the following precautions before responding to or clicking any links in an unsolicited email:

  • Verify the sender's email address
  • Do not accept payment for services you have not provided or financial assistance you have not applied for.
  • Be cautious of emails that are poorly written.  Example: poor grammar, lack of sentence structure, text in all caps or bold
  • Be wary of offers from people you don't know or companies you are not familiar with.
  • If an email includes a logo of business or college you are familiar with take the time to verify the email address of the sender before responding.
  • Remember, if it's too good to be true, it probably is.
