Modesto Junior College Health Services is staffed full-time by registered nurses and mental health providers. Providers will evaluate and treat most minor, temporary physical and/or mental health concerns that require short-term care. Many concerns require a referral to a community medical or other service provider, and every effort will be made to assist students in establishing off-site care as needed.

YCCD/MJC Employees/Student Workers Injuries: Report your injury to your immediate supervisor and call Company Nurse at 877-854-6877.
MJC Students (including while traveling for off-campus events): Report your injury to your instructor (if in class or on a field trip) or a MJC Campus Safety Officer and complete a Injury Reporting Form. You may also visit Health Services or the MJC Campus Safety office to access the Injury Reporting Form.
What is TB?
Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The
bacteria usually attack the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body
such as the kidney, spine, and brain. If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal.
What is a TB skin test?
A TB test will tell you if you have ever had TB germs in the body. A harmless fluid
is placed under your arm with a small needle. After the test is administered, you
must return to the clinic so that the nurse can look at the test spot on your arm.
This is called a TB read.
What is the fee for a TB skin test?
TB skin tests are $5. Health Services accepts credit card, debit, or exact cash.
Why do I need two TB skin tests?
If you work or will be placed in a medical setting for your program, you may require
the two step TB skin test to ensure a more accurate reading/result.

When can I return for the TB read?
You must be able to return 48-72 hours after the TB test is placed. Please consider our days and hours of operation for TB readings. If you fail to return and you request another test, you must pay a $15 fee.
Can I set up an appointment for TB Screenings/Test?
Yes, in-person TB skin tests are available by appointment. Please contact our office for available appointment dates and times.
How does TB Spread?
TB is spread through the air from one person to another. The TB bacteria are put into
the air when a person with TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, speaks,
or sings. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected.

If you have been accepted into an Allied Health program for the current semester, you are required to complete a Health Clearance.
You may obtain your program’s specific Health Clearance requirements and needed documents from the Allied Health Department (located in Glacier Hall) or the Health Services offices.
In order to receive your health clearance (aka the “golden ticket”), you must have all required documents completed. You may choose to complete the requirements with your own physician or provider’s office, but please be sure to speak with a Health Services nurse to make sure you are on track. Upload all Health Clearance documents to your student Health Portal then contact Health Services to schedule a Health Clearance document review with our nurses. Only a Health Services nurse can provide the final “Golden Ticket” Health Clearance.

What is a Health Clearance?
It is a list of requirements set up by a specific academic program. Many of these requirements are in place to protect patients and staff from communicable diseases in health care settings.
Do I have to use the MJC Health Services office to obtain the items needed for my clearance?
The final Health Clearance document can only be obtained through the Health Services office. You may choose to go to your own health care provider to obtain any immunizations, screenings or TB clearances needed.
Do I make an appointment for my Health Clearance?
Yes, please contact the Health Services office to schedule an appointment for your health clearance. Upload your documents to the Health Portal in preparation for your review with the Health Services nurse.
How long will it take to receive my final clearance?
It can take anywhere from 1-3 weeks to obtain all your items and receive your final clearance. We recommend starting your clearance process and uploading your documents as soon as possible.
What is the cost of immunizations, screenings or lab work?

Can I get all my immunizations, screenings or lab work at once?
It depends on which immunizations and screenings you need. The nurse will review your immunization record to determine what you need and guide you through the clearance process.
Where can I have the lab work (titers) completed?
After obtaining a lab request from the Health Services office or your primary care provider, the lab work may be completed at any Quest Lab or lab indicated by your provider. Should your titers indicate that you lack immunity to a particular disease, you will be required to obtain a booster vaccine or the entire series of immunizations for that particular disease (depending on your specific immunization history)

The U.S. is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic.
Modesto Junior College has resources available for students to learn how to recognize and prevent opioid overdose. Health Services offers fentanyl test strips and free opioid overdose medication, Narcan Nasal Spray, to keep on hand if you or someone close to you is at risk for opioid overdose. Anyone who uses opioids can be at risk for opioid overdose.
Request Narcan over the counter at Modesto Junior College Health Services during office hours. You may also schedule an appointment to review the training with a nurse.

Available over-the counter in Health Services, fentanyl test strips (FTS) and fentanyl/xylazine test strips are a low-cost method of helping prevent drug overdoses and reducing harm. FTS are small strips of paper that can detect the presence of fentanyl in all different kinds of drugs (cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, etc.) and drug forms (pills, powder, and injectables). Under California Health and Safety Code 11376.5, a person will not be charged with drug possession or use crimes if that person: acts in good faith, and seeks medical assistance/emergency medical services for another person experiencing a drug-related overdose. This law was designed to encourage a witness of a drug-related overdose to call 911 or seek emergency help in a timely manner to save the life of the overdose victim. Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventative disease and death in the United States. The Surgeon General has concluded that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found secondhand tobacco smoke to be a risk to public health, and has classified secondhand smoke as a group A carcinogen, the most dangerous class of carcinogen. Furthermore, the California Air Resources Board has categorized secondhand smoke as a toxic air contaminant. Secondhand smoke is hazardous to smokers and nonsmokers alike. To promote a safe and healthy campus environment, Modesto Junior College has adopted this smoke and tobacco-free policy.
Modesto Junior College is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for its students, employees, and visitors. In light of evidence that the use of tobacco and nicotine as well as exposure to secondhand smoke and aerosol (commonly referred to as "vapor") from electronic smoking devices pose significant health and environmental hazards, Modesto Junior College has established a smoke, vapor and tobacco-free environment.
Smoking and the use of all tobacco products are prohibited at all times on all property and in all indoor and outdoor spaces owned, leased, licensed, or otherwise controlled by Modesto Junior College. Such products will also not be sold or distributed on Modesto Junior College-controlled property. No advertising or marketing of such products shall be permitted on Modesto Junior College-controlled property or in publications produced by the Modesto Junior College.
"Electronic Smoking Device" means an electronic device that may be used to deliver any aerosolized or vaporized substance to the person inhaling from the device, including but not limited to, an e-cigarette, e-cigar, e-pipe, vape pen, or e-hookah.
"Smoking" means inhaling, exhaling, or burning any tobacco, nicotine, cannabis, or plant product, whether natural or synthetic, such as cigar, cigarette, cigarillo, pipe, or any other lighted, heated, or activated tobacco, nicotine, cannabis or plant product intended for inhalation. "Smoking" also means using an electronic smoking device or hookah.
"Tobacco Product" means any product containing, made from, or derived from tobacco or nicotine that is intended for human consumption or is likely to be consumed, whether smoked, heated, chewed, absorbed, dissolved, inhaled, snorted, sniffed, or ingested by any other means, including, but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, little cigars, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco, snuff, or snus; and any electronic smoking device and any substances that may be aerosolized or vaporized by such device, whether or not the substance contains nicotine.
"Tobacco Product" does not include a product that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for sale as a tobacco treatment product marketed and sold solely for such an approved purpose.
It is the responsibility of the administration to ensure compliance with this procedure. It is the responsibility of managers and supervisors to inform their employees of this procedure and it is the responsibility of all employees to inform the students.
Nicotine is an addictive product and it may take time for students, faculty, and staff that use tobacco to change habits of use. For these reasons, education, including resources and referrals for tobacco treatment, will be the primary mode of enforcement.
