With more than 30 years of experience in higher education, Laurie Weiss, Ph.D., brings
deep institutional knowledge and a collaborative leadership style focused on academic
excellence, innovation, and student success. Prior to serving as Interim Vice President
of Instruction, she was Dean of the Schools of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics
and Business & Computing, where she led initiatives that expanded transfer and career
pathways, strengthened industry partnerships, and increased opportunities for students
to engage in high-demand fields. She has also played a leadership role in advancing
workforce development through grants and partnerships that connect education with
emerging industries, particularly in STEM and the growing bioeconomy.
Dr. Weiss earned a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from California State University, Fresno, and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physical Chemistry from the University of California, Davis. Before moving into administration, she taught chemistry at MJC for more than 20 years and was an early leader in online education, teaching the college's first online course in 1997. Throughout her career, she has been committed to innovative teaching practices, student engagement, and helping students connect their education to meaningful academic and career opportunities.
While she is honored by the opportunities she has had to lead programs, grants, and initiatives, what Dr. Weiss is most proud of is the work happening in classrooms, labs, studios, libraries, and learning spaces across MJC every day. MJC's faculty and staff are deeply committed to helping students discover their potential, achieve their goals, and find meaningful pathways to transfer, employment, and lifelong learning. Across the college, instruction engages students in critical thinking, hands-on learning, creativity, and real-world applications that prepare them for success in a rapidly changing world.
As Interim Vice President of Instruction, Dr. Weiss is focused on supporting instructional excellence and fostering an environment where students, faculty, and staff can thrive.
