2023

Louie and Michelle MoruaThe husband-and-wife team of Louie and Michelle Morua are the 2023 co-Online Instructors of the Year. Both teach courses in the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program. Louie worked as a firefighter and fire captain, and Michelle worked as an emergency department nurse in San Francisco.

During the pandemic, Louie and Michelle transitioned to online teaching, showcasing their adaptability and resourcefulness. They harnessed the power of technology, creating engaging videos and utilizing tools like Canvas Studio and the Zoom whiteboard to ensure their students could continue their training. They could sense that excitement was growing in their courses, and students began to shine.

Michelle notes that “online teaching is a progression, evolving every semester.” She and Louie pay attention to what is working and what isn’t, and they make changes each term to stay current. This generation of students needs a variety of activities to stay involved, including video, embedded quizzes, and choice for how to submit work such as in writing or video. They credit their faculty mentor, Tony Pacheco, that adding points to activities helps keep students engaged and accountable.

Louie and Michelle are deeply committed to helping others and treating them like family, especially in an emergency. They have many “adopted” kids who have been students in their courses and who have gone on to work as nurses, firefighters, paramedics, and captains. As Michelle puts it, “I love seeing the light turn on in each student.”
