Ethnic Studies Instructor, Modesto Junior College

Beth AuBeth Au, Ethnic Studies instructor at Modesto Junior College, is the 2025 Online Instructor of the Year. She teaches Ethnic Studies 101 and brings both academic expertise and lived experience into her online classroom.

Beth holds a Master’s degree in Asian American Studies from UCLA and was drawn to the discipline through her own exploration of identity as a fourth-generation American Born Chinese (ABC). Her teaching background spans elementary education, English as a Second Language instruction abroad, and leadership work within the California Community Colleges system. She joined MJC as a part-time instructor in 2023 and became a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in 2024.

In her online courses, Beth emphasizes clear organization, strong instructor presence, and meaningful student engagement. She is recognized for creating welcoming online spaces where students feel encouraged to participate, often using low-stakes, community-building questions to foster connection. Her course design prioritizes ease of navigation and accessibility, using tools such as Advanced Cidilabs to present content clearly and avoid cognitive overload.

Beth approaches online teaching as an evolving practice. She regularly collaborates with the MJC Online Education team and instructional designers, revisits her course design each semester, and intentionally experiments with new tools to enhance engagement and improve the student experience. Her commitment to growth, clarity, and connection exemplifies the values of effective online teaching at MJC.
