Christopher Briggs, MJC Professor of Reading and English, is the 2024 Online Instructor of the Year. Chris’s students rave about his online courses: “Perfect class structure. Easy to keep up with assignments/due dates. Provides videos with explanations of assignments/lessons, along with supporting information about the lessons/assignments. Places announcements, keeps us up to date with due dates and when new lessons become available. It shows that he wants all of us to succeed.”

Like many MJC faculty who only taught in person, Chris found himself teaching online during the COVID-19 pandemic. To his surprise, he discovered that teaching online energized and organized his teaching in unexpected ways. Chris explains the experience with an analogy. At one time, he used to track his household budget using a hand-written ledger, but once he converted to Excel, tracking expenses became easier and more insightful. The same thing happened to his teaching when working online. Canvas helped him plan an entire semester intentionally rather than day-by-day. The process helped him build better courses.

Chris is also a fan of the open culture that is part of online instruction. He finds that colleagues are happy to share their online courses and activities, and together, they can adapt pieces that improve their students’ learning experiences.  

Chris enjoys creating video lectures because they allow students to rewatch challenging sections: “I like the fact that the students don’t have just one shot at the content. They can pause the video and rewind if they need to.”

Chris thinks Zoom office hours are one of the more under-utilized resources on campus. He offers extra credit early in the term to entice his students to attend. He also lets his students know he was in their shoes when he was a student at Delta College. He remembers the challenges and shares with his students how he created a successful academic path that eventually led him to an MA from Johns Hopkins and an MA from CSU Stanislaus.

When students do well on an assignment, Chris asks if he can highlight their work in a Canvas announcement or as an example. Invariably, students are honored to be asked, and other students appreciate seeing models of good work: “He truly cares about his students. [His reading assignments are] truly helpful for personal growth and mental health. [His course] is a blast! I wish he offered more courses!”

Chris enjoys gardening and playing with his energetic Goldendoodle when he isn't teaching. He is also a cyclist who rides almost daily. His favorite rides are long ones along the coast.
