Modesto Junior College partnered with the Institute for Evidence-Based Change (IEBC) to transform MJC into a Caring Campus. This initiative is based on research that shows, “students who feel more connected to their college are more likely to be retained, persist from semester to semester, and complete their academic goals.”

In 2023, select MJC Classified Professionals attended IEBC-led coaching sessions to develop and implement plans intended to foster a culture of caring on our campuses. Five behavioral commitments were created to be implemented beginning Fall 2023.

These commitments are a promise to use specific actions, language, or visual cues to help our students feel welcome and cared for. We hope you will join us in implementing these commitments and making MJC a more Caring Campus.

Caring Campus Commitments

Commitment 1: Name Badges

Wearing name badges helps to identify employees and makes finding help easier.

Commitment 2: Ten Foot Rule

Acknowledging and interacting with our students on campus or making ourselves available to assist students.

Commitment 3: Warm Referrals

Taking time to transfer students to appropriate services either by personal escort or providing clear information and materials to help them navigate campus.

Commitment 4: Cross-Dept. Awareness

Educating and informing staff of new or updated departments and responsibilities to help direct students to the appropriate services.

Commitment 5: First Week Greetings

Create a 1st impression where students feel cared for, respected, and welcomed to campus.

Our Mission

MJC Caring Campus advocates to create a student-centered environment where positive, intentional, campus-wide behaviors influence student engagement, connectedness, and academic success.

We want our students to know they are cared for, they are supported, and they belong.
